Frequently Asked Questions

Accelerate Your Healing

Everything you want to know…

Q: What is MAT?

A: MAT stands for Muscle Activation Techniques and it is the systematic assessment and correction of muscular imbalances. We get muscles working by “plugging them back in” to the nervous system. An analogy here would be the action of turning on a light – you can turn or flip the switch as often as you want but there will be no light if the electrical cord is not plugged into the outlet. The same applies to the muscular system – you can work a muscle over and over in the gym and/or through rehab exercises but if it is not “plugged in” to your nervous system, your body will simply work around it. In short, stress shuts the connection down and MAT restores it.

Q: How is MAT different from traditional rehabilitation?

A: MAT considers muscle weakness or inhibition to be the main problem. Your muscle has lost power because it is not plugged into the source of that power (i.e.: your nervous system). This weakness creates the need for protection or protective tightness. MAT restores the connection so that weak/disconnected muscles can contract optimally and the need for protective tightness goes away. There is no longer a need to constantly stretch to relieve those tight muscles.

Q: How is Apana Bodywork different?

A: At Apana, healing is the key. You will be assessed on several factors every time you walk in our door, with the goal being to optimize healing while minimizing stress. Sometimes, relaxation is the main goal of a particular session and MAT will take a back seat. Whatever the treatment or combination of treatments that you need, it is all orchestrated to optimize the healing process.

Q: What is the overall process at Apana Bodywork?

A: The initial consultation is an hour and a half where we complete a health history as well as a full body assessment in terms of range of motion and strength. A follow-up visit is scheduled for one week after the initial consultation to see if any change/progress has been made. A course of treatment is then recommended. Most people need one treatment a week and then taper off to one maintenance treatment every two to four weeks. Some clients reach their goal and only return on an ‘as needed’ basis.

Q: How many sessions will I need?

A: This will vary based on several factors:

  • length of time that the challenge/issue has existed
  • severity of symptoms
  • history of surgery
  • trauma

When a client presents with a chronic or persistent pain or imbalance Trame Vibrational Therapy is recommended to speed the healing process. We’ve found the combination of Trame with MAT gets much faster results despite all the above factors that are at play.

Q: Is MAT covered by insurance?

A: At the moment, MAT is not actively pursuing coverage by insurance plans. The reason for this is that, once MAT is regulated, there could be many restrictions implemented which can and will negatively impact the one-on-one type of care that we want to provide to our clients.

Q: Why should I try MAT?

A: MAT bridges the gap between traditional rehabilitation and optimal function. As an example, when you are discharged from the hospital after surgery, you are sent for either physiotherapy (PT) or occupational therapy (OT) and from there, when you are able to function well enough to take care of yourself, you are sent home. The goal with MAT is to take you from just being able to take care of yourself to being able to play with your kids, play sports, or get back into the gym or to yoga without worry of injury or pain. MAT takes you that extra step in your healing process so you can feel like yourself again and return without fear to activities you previously enjoyed.

Q: Is MAT painful?

A: Unlike some traditional therapies, MAT does not dig into the painful spot and keep going until you can no longer stand the pain. The hands-on aspect of MAT is specific to where muscles attach to bones so there is no pressure applied to/lingering in the painful areas. We typically avoid treating a painful area to prevent any further irritation.

Q: How does MAT work?

A: The effect of MAT is on the muscle spindle itself and in restoring its role in communicating with the brain. Once we treat an area, MAT restores the necessary communication between muscle and the brain which then allows the muscle to contract when it is required to do so. The muscle spindle is responsible for communicating muscle length to the brain and without such information, proper muscular contraction will not occur.

Q: What causes blockages in the first place?

A: blockages can be caused by:

  • Stored EMOTIONS that have not been expressed or released. Release emotions and feel the relief. Your shoulders drop and you feel calm for the first time in a while.
  • Stored MEMORIES from past trauma or negative experiences. Memories can be great but when they’re traumatizing, they seem to linger in the worst way. It can affect your dreams, drain your energy and make you feel downright crummy. Feel the burden lift as you clear out those blocks that are keeping you stuck in the past.
  • Stored NEGATIVE BELIEFS that create your reality. Negative beliefs are like magnets, attracting more of the same. Change your beliefs, change your perspective. This can alter your relationship with yourself and others in your life empowering you in the process.
